My name is Audrey. I am a native of Suriname, and a certified Tour Manager. I have a couple of things to show you!
First, allow me a minute to tell you a bit about myself.
I was born in Moengo, in the eastern part of the country. When I was growing up, Moengo was a flourishing little town, and the center of Suriname’s bauxite industry. Right after primary school, I left my peaceful birthplace when the family re-located to the Netherlands.
In 2012, after almost 40 years, I packed up my bags in Amsterdam and came home. Initially, I pretty much felt and acted like an alien! The official language in Suriname is Dutch and I had always spoken Surinamese while being away, so technically, there was no language barrier. But my Netherlands-accent and European approach often gave me away – even worse when I would yet again lose my way driving around with no GPS at hand. Driving around meaning on the left-hand side, which can be very confusing when it is new to you, and every now and then I would land on the opposite side of the road. The unexpected moves of motorbikes and other cars are another complicating factor, which resulted in three traffic accidents in my first few months as a returnee.
Currently, however, I can honestly say that I do no longer get cursed at in traffic, I am able to blend in and find my way better each day. I enjoy exploring the country in all its aspects, and have even made a couple of first-time trips to the amazing interior with its powerful rapids. And now, I would like to show you what I see! This mighty land has often been disregarded – many times, even its natives do not seem to appreciate its beauty.
Tourism is an upcoming industry in Suriname. There are still many unbeaten paths to travel, and you might not find package tours to Suriname from your country. The unbeaten paths are a good thing, right? And while it is very well possible to enjoy your vacation in Suriname as an independent traveler, there are some things to consider in order to enjoy your stay to the max.
Are you ready to hop on? Let me show you around!
